What does your wallet say about you?

Tags: Articles

How one handles their money speaks volumes about the type of person they really are.  Money makes the world go round and the contents of your wallet are the middle men for most things you do… so have a little respect. We’re not saying give your wallet it’s own room in your house, simply keep it organised, that way if you’re ever in an accident and they check for ID they don’t get a shock and refuse to aid you (it could happen and may still happen if your picture is really bad).

So is your wallet filled with cards and no notes?

You like to simply pay for everything by card, even the little things. This usually indicates that you don’t like to keep on top of all your expenditures and are possibly the “head in the sand” type. Ask yourself, do you know how much is in your bank account right now? If the answer is no then you probably have some bills to open as well - this type of person usually leaves letters unopened for as long as humanly possible when they know it’s a bill. Using cards all the time prevents you having to look at your bank account on a regular basis which tends to suggests you are afraid of confronting the reality of your financial situation. "But hold on...I don't keep cash in my wallet for a good reason... it helps me spend less and actually keep better track of my expenditures through online banking" - ok smarty pants, this may be acceptable, if it's true!

Is your wallet bursting?

Is your wallet bulging so much that you’re embarrassed to store it in your front pocket? Or maybe that’s why you want to store it in your front pocket - everything is so clear now!

The source of the "bulge" is important when attempting to understand the person behind it. Is it bulging with money? This suggests that you either have way too much money or you simply have an inability to micro-manage your finances. Carrying a “float” in your wallet is useful because you never know when some cash is required. But carrying the entire contents of your bank account is asking for trouble. Try to reign this in by keeping more money in your bank, this strikes a good balance.

Is it bulging with cards you never use? Again this suggests a lack of control and in-ability to manage your finances. Get rid of the ones you never use, are you storing them for a rainy day? Should I start building the Ark now?

Is it bulging with old receipts? This is partially a positive thing, it shows you have a desire to keep track of your outgoings, but it unfortunately it also shows you lack the will to go all the way and actually organise the outgoings. It’d be useful for you to periodically empty your wallet, going through the receipts and sorting them out. You're also the type of person that probably bought a guitar with the intention of being awsome... but have now (3 months later) played it about 3 times... for a few seconds. I'm sure you'll get to it eventually when you're not busy, right?

You’re wallet is insanely neat?

Well you’re clearly an organised individual who knows what he wants, how much you need to get it, but more importantly you actually know if you have enough in the bank to buy it. If everything in your wallet has its place, this suggests you like to be on top of everything and in control. Some would say you need to relax a little, but not us! You will surely succeed in life or probably already have, keeping your wallet/receipts organised so your accountant can tell you to buy a boat!

Remember, they way you organise you wallet reflects on your approach to life. Are you messy, unorganised, compulsive, controlling, neat, driven or focused? All these traits can be indentified by simply examining a man’s wallet. So what does your wallet say about you?

PickPocket Prevention Part 6

6th Wallet Safety Tip:

Don't tape your wallet to your forehead! Avoid pointless exposure by putting your wallet away as soon as you're finished with it. When you've just bought something be mindful of walking out of the store "fiddling" with it. Put your wallet away when at the counter, not at the exit of the store (don't feel like your holding anyone up).

It's surprising how many times I've seen this; someone in front of me buying something then walking away from the counter still having not returned their card and still attempting to squeeze the receipt into their already bulging wallet, reaching the exit of the shop wallet still in hand... doing this not only leaves you open to a snatch and run situation but you also signposts the location of your wallet to any pickpocket in the area. Don't make yourself a target, put it away quickly.

5th Wallet safety tip:

The World is Not your friend! This one is simple... remember not to be so damn trusting of everyone. We're not saying "don't talk to anyone", but being alert and a little suspicious of strangers can go a long way in keeping your wallet safe. Recently when in Milan attending a trade show I was approached by a charming lad in the Piazza Del Duomo trying to sell me coloured string to wear around my wrist. As nice as he was, his string was not for me...* wink wink.

The Kitchen sink too? When traveling or on holiday do you really need to carry everything with you all the time? No, of course not. Only take what you need. This means emptying your wallet a little: leave some money, ID, credit cards etc in you room. That way if you do get pickpocketed you don't lose everything and are left stranded! Oh, and be sure to store the contents safely in your hotel room, wouldn't want someone coming in to change the sheets and stealing it now would we?

3rd Wallet Safety Tip:

Be Wary of Large Crowds. When walking through large crowds of people physical contact is guaranteed. This is a perfect situation for pickpockets to make off with your wallet and if you don't keep your wits about you, you might leave the crowd lighter than you went in. if you stop to watch a street performer, be mindful of your personal items, recognise where they are. Hopefully your wallet is not in your back pocket (tip 1) because these masses of distracted people looking in the wrong direction is a buffet for pickpockets.  Stand at the outside of the crowd and for extra security why not put your hands in your pocket(the wallet pocket).

2nd wallet Safety Tip:

Please don't count your bundles of cash in public, unless you're an undercover police officer trying to catch a pickpocket... in which case *claps good on you sir! I cannot count the number of times I've been walking down the highstreet only to pass someone "fiddling" with their wallet for whatever reason, head down and not paying any attention whatsoever to their surrounding. I could easily grab their wallet and run, if it wasn't for the fact I'm afraid of jail... or that I'm not a really fast runner and would likely be caught and beaten to a pulp (damn my running ability)! In short if you have to count your masses of money, re-organize your cards or check your receipts, do it in private or at least have your wits about you.

New Blog Series

In light of our new articles soon to be published, we at Wallets Direct have decided to launch a new Series of blog updates "Keeping your Wallet safe from Pickpockets".

Wallet Safety Tip Number 1:

Not in the Back Pocket! Never store your wallet in your back pocket, because out of sight out of mind. You are way more likely to notice a pickpocket reaching into your front than sneakily slipping your wallet out the back pocket. Remember a bulge in your backpocket is a huge target on your ass, one that pickpockets will quickly zero in on.
